Novell's NFS Gateway Extends the Reach of NetWare Users to NFS Servers
New NLM Delivers Transparent Access to Remote UNIX Systems
INTEROP SPRING, WASHINGTON, D.C. -- March 8, 1993 -- Novell, Inc. today
introduced NetWare NFS Gateway, a server-based connectivity solution
that further extends the reach of the NetWare environment into the UNIX
world. NetWare NFS Gateway meets the needs of customers who want the
ability to access Network File System (NFS) file services on remote
UNIX systems as easily and transparently as they access files on NetWare
servers.
Bruce Marler, technology assessor and systems integrator for Oregon State
University's College of Oceanography, has been beta testing the NFS
Gateway. "We do a significant amount of mathematical modeling and
imaging on our high performance supercomputers and UNIX workstations,"
says Marler. "But we also need to access and refine this data from our
desktop PCs. Accessing data has to be part of the seamless infrastructure
of our existing desktop computing environment. That's exactly what
Novell's NFS Gateway product delivers. Our desktop PCs now manipulate
data that exists on our bigger UNIX computers by simply using the tools
provided by the native operating system, whether it's Microsoft Windows
or DOS."
"NetWare NFS Gateway is a giant step in the evolution of Novell's NetWare
and UNIX integration products and an exciting new solution for our
customers," said Bob Davis, vice president and general manager of
Novell's Connectivity Products Division. "The product breaks down the
technology barriers between the NetWare and UNIX environments, enabling
people familiar with NetWare to access NFS files in the very same way.
It fits nicely with all our other UNIX connectivity products in growing
the network computing industry by meeting different customer needs in
different ways."
The addition of NetWare NFS Gateway to Novell's UNIX connectivity product
line gives customers a choice of how to access files on remote UNIX
systems. DOS and Windows users who are comfortable in the NetWare
environment can use the gateway to share files on UNIX systems while
keeping their familiar, NetWare-centric view of the network. The NFS
files appear to users as DOS or Windows files located on the NetWare
server. For users who want full TCP/IP access to UNIX files and
applications on remote systems, Novell's LAN WorkPlace and LAN
WorkGroup products remain the ideal choice.
NetWare NFS Gateway provides centralized installation and
administration, eliminating the need for administrators to install and
manage software on every workstation. It saves organizations
considerable time and money by leveraging file resources on both
NetWare and NFS systems with no extra training on the part of the user.
Also, because access to NFS files is achieved through the NetWare
server, users receive the superior security features that are inherent
in NetWare.
NetWare NFS Gateway consists of a set of NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs)
for NetWare v3.11. The product installs easily on the server by using
the standard NetWare INSTALL mechanism and requires no additional
software on the client workstation. A version for NetWare 4.0 is under
development.
The NetWare NFS Gateway is stratified in versions for 5, 10, 20, 50,
100 and 250 users. It has a suggested retail price ranging from
US$1,500 for five users ($300 per seat) to US$12,495 for 250 users
($50 per seat) (see table below). Novell's NetWare NFS Gateway will
be available April 5, 1993 from Novell Gold, Platinum and UNIX Master
resellers. Pricing applies in the United States only. For pricing
outside the United States, customers should contact their local Novell
authorized reseller or call (408) 473-8995.

10-user version US$2,495
20-user version US$3,495
